Google Translate is a handy tool to use while traveling, but if you’re going abroad and don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on roaming costs, you can download the dictionaries you need for offline use.
Downloading a dictionary for a specific language is easy to do with the mobile Google Translate app. There are currently 59 languages available for offline use.

How to Download Google Translate Languages

Open up the Google Translate app and tap either language that is showing at the top of the app.
This will open up a page with all the languages available to translate using the app. Any language that is available to download for offline use will have a download icon next to it.
Tap the download icon to save the dictionary for offline use. Google Translate will let you know how much space the download will take on your phone. Each language shouldn’t take up more than 45MB on your phone. Tap the Download button.

Any language you have downloaded for offline use will have a checkmark next to it.
Another way to install offline languages (and see the full list of languages available) is to tap Menu (hamburger icon) > Offline Translations. You’ll see a full list of downloadable languages.

How to Delete Google Translate Languages

If your trip is over and you no longer need the offline translation, or need that space back on your phone, open up Google Translate and go back to the list of languages.
Tap the checkmark next to the language you want to remove. A dialog box will open asking you if you want to remove the download. Tap Remove.
Another way to delete it is to tap Menu (hamburger icon) > Offline Translations and tap the trash can next to the language you want to delete.
Google Translate also recently introduced improvements to its offline translations relying more on AI than a direct translation that might not be of great help while trying not to stand out too much in a foreign country.
